Connection but Detachment

I care about the work completely and hold it at arm's length on purpose. Close enough to move fast; detached enough to see it straight when it's wrong.

Attachment makes you defend the thing you built. Detachment lets you cut it. The best decisions I've made were about things I loved and killed anyway, because the system was better without them.

It's not coldness. It's the only way I know to keep the work honest — and to keep myself from becoming the thing I set out to fix.
